India has reached a significant milestone by becoming an exporter of sniper rifles for the first time. A Bengaluru-based company, SSS Defence, has secured a substantial export contract from a friendly nation for the supply of .338 Lapua Magnum calibre sniper rifles. This contract signifies India’s entry into the international market for high-precision, long-range rifles entirely designed and manufactured within the country.

The .338 Lapua Magnum sniper rifles are designed for precision targeting up to 1,500 meters and beyond. According to a report by The Print, this is the first instance of India exporting sniper rifles. Sources within the defence sector have confirmed that SSS Defence has already completed the first batch of exports and is currently engaged in discussions with several other countries interested in their products. Delegations from these nations have visited the firm’s manufacturing and testing center in Bengaluru, indicating serious interest and the potential for future deals. These visits underscore the international recognition of India’s defence manufacturing capabilities.

According to an unidentified source published by The Print, India has transitioned from a net importer of defense equipment to an emergent exporter. “India is now manufacturing and exporting a large number of equipment, from artillery guns to missile systems and small arms,” a source informed me. SSS Defence’s success reflects broader improvements in India’s defence industry.

The .338 Lapua Magnum sniper rifle has substantial export potential. This calibre is used by at least 30 countries, making it a highly sought-after specification in the global market. Moreover, over a dozen manufacturers worldwide produce rifles in various configurations for this calibre, indicating a robust and competitive market.
