India’s women’s ice hockey team has made history by winning its first-ever medal — a bronze — at the 2025 IIHF Women’s Asia Cup. The tournament was held from May 31 to June 6 in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Indian team defeated the host country, UAE, 5–4 in a thrilling semifinal. They then secured third place after competing with five other strong teams from across Asia. This bronze medal is a huge achievement for a team that started only in 2016 and has faced many challenges since then.

What makes this victory even more special is the fact that the team had very limited resources. They did not have proper gear, full-time training support, or much media attention. Most of the players trained on small or makeshift ice rinks, and they often used their own money to keep playing. Despite this, they stayed united and determined.

The team captain, Tsewang Chuskit, said proudly, “We didn’t just play — we believed we could win.”

The players come from places like Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Delhi. Their hard work and belief in themselves helped them overcome all odds. This win has inspired many people and brought attention to women’s winter sports in India.

Supporters and sports experts now hope this medal will bring more support from the government and sports bodies. The victory proves that Indian women can shine even in lesser-known sports if given a chance.
