External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that India has already raised its concerns about energy security with a US senator who is supporting a bill that proposes a 500% tariff on countries that trade with Russia.

Jaishankar is currently on a four-day visit to the United States. While speaking at a press conference in Washington, he said that India is aware of how the bill could affect it since India is one of the biggest buyers of Russian oil.

"I think our concerns and our interests in energy security have been made conversant to him. So, we will then have to cross that bridge when we come to it, if we come to it," Jaishankar said.

The bill has been introduced by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham. Jaishankar confirmed that Indian officials and the Indian Embassy in the US are in touch with him.

He also said that India keeps a close watch on developments in the US Congress, especially on matters that are of importance to India or could affect it.

What complicates the situation is that US President Donald Trump has supported the bill. The bill is being seen as part of the Trump government’s plan to pressure Russia into negotiating on the Ukraine war.
