Actor and model Shefali Jariwala, popularly known for her 2002 music video Kaanta Laga, died suddenly on June 27 at the age of 42. Her unexpected death has shocked the entertainment industry. Shefali has had epilepsy since she was 15. Besides Kaanta Laga, she acted in the film Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and appeared on TV shows like Nach Baliye and Bigg Boss 13 with her husband, actor Parag Tyagi.
On June 27, her husband rushed her to Bellevue Multispeciality Hospital in Mumbai around 11:15 pm. Sadly, she was declared dead on arrival. Initial reports suggest she died of a heart attack, possibly due to low blood pressure and stomach issues. The final postmortem report is expected on June 30. Police have said it appears to be a natural death and no foul play is suspected.
Doctors and police are checking if her death was linked to medications, food poisoning, or her epilepsy. Police suspect she may have died from cardiac arrest caused by self-medication and food poisoning.
Reports say Shefali was fasting for a puja on June 27. Despite this, she ate stale fried rice and took anti-ageing injections without recent medical supervision. At her home, police found skin fairness and detox injections (like glutathione), Vitamin C shots, and acidity pills.
A source said she had been using anti-ageing treatments for 7–8 years and took an injection on the day she died. Doctors believe these injections and medicines could have caused her heart problems, especially since she was fasting.
What Doctor said
Dr. Rahul Chawla, a neurologist, told NDTV that IV glutathione and detox drips are not medically approved and can be risky. These can have some serious side effects, such as heart rhythm problems, low blood pressure, and sudden collapse. He said there have been cases where people died after taking these drips, likely because of sudden drops in blood pressure. However, he added that we cannot directly blame these drips for every sudden cardiac death in people who have used them.
If Shefali Jariwala’s death was linked to her anti-ageing treatment, it once again shows the strong pressure on women, especially in the entertainment industry, to look young and perfect. The postmortem report, expected today, will help confirm the exact cause of her death.
Though Shefali’s career had ups and downs because of her epilepsy, she never completely left the limelight. Even after her Kaanta Laga fame, she stayed active through stage shows, public events, and her social media, where she often shared moments from her life with her husband, Parag Tyagi.
