To make train travel safer and better for passengers, Indian Railways announced on Monday that all new train rakes made for the Mumbai Suburban division will have automatic door closing systems. Existing trains will also be updated with this safety feature.

This announcement came after a serious accident at Mumbra station in Thane district, where several passengers fell from a moving train headed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

Overcrowding likely caused the accident

Early reports suggest that about 10 to 15 passengers lost their balance and fell onto the railway tracks while the train was moving. According to Central Railways, cited by news agency ANI, the accident is believed to have been caused by overcrowding inside the train.

After the accident, railway officials and police quickly arrived at the scene. Sadly, one person died, and several others were injured. The injured were taken to the nearest hospitals for treatment.

Official statement from Central Railways

“Some passengers travelling towards CSMT fell from the train at Thane’s Mumbra railway station. The reason for the accident is believed to be an excessive crowd in the train. The railway administration and police have reached the spot. The injured are being taken immediately to the nearest hospital. Investigation into the accident has begun. Local services have also been affected by the incident," said Central Railways.
