The West Bengal Bar Council on Wednesday cancelled the licence of Manojit Mishra, which means he can no longer work as a lawyer. This happened because Mishra was named as the main accused in the case of a student being raped at South Kolkata Law College. After this, more of his past wrongdoings came to light. The Bar Council took this action seven days after they got a formal complaint about the incident.
After a meeting on July 2, the Bengal Bar Council decided to remove Manojit Mishra’s name from the list of lawyers. They will also inform the Central Bar Council about this decision. This means Mishra cannot work as a lawyer or represent anyone in any court in West Bengal.
The rape case at South Kolkata Law College has caused huge anger among people. Because of this, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Kolkata Police, along with the Intelligence Department, is investigating the case fully. So far, four people, including Mishra, have been arrested. The case has also been taken over by the Detective Department of Kolkata Police for further investigation.
Mishra was the main accused. He was an important member of the Trinamool Congress student wing (TMCP) and used to work as a lawyer in Alipore court. The Bar Council’s decision is seen as a strict action against his wrongdoing.
Now, Mishra cannot work as a lawyer in any court in West Bengal. Earlier, on Tuesday, the Governing Body of South Calcutta Law College had already removed Mishra from his temporary position at the college, and both students involved were also expelled from the college.
About the case
A 24-year-oldwoman has filed a police complaint accusing three men Including Manojit Mishra of gang-rape inside the campus of South Calcutta Law College. The accused include a former student and two current students. The woman claims she was attacked after rejecting a marriage proposal from the main accused, who is a former student of the college.
According to the complaint, the main accused, referred to as ‘J’ in the report, allegedly pressured the woman to marry him. When she refused, he threatened her by saying he would harm her boyfriend and implicate her parents in false cases. She said he then confined her inside the college and assaulted her, leaving her injured even though she fought back.
“They tried to force me with the intention of having sex,” she said in her complaint. “I denied and fought back by not letting him do anything and pushing him back. I cried and asked him to let me go. I told them I have a boyfriend, and I love my boyfriend. But they did not agree.”
“They locked the gate, filmed the assault, and threatened me” The woman said she had a panic attack and was struggling to breathe but received no help. She asked to be taken to the hospital, but the accused refused. She also said the college gate was locked, and though the guard was present, he didn’t help. “I asked them to take me to hospital, but they were not helping me. They had locked the main gate of the college, and the guard was helpless and did not help,” she said.
