The Allahabad High Court Bar Association started an indefinite strike on Tuesday to protest the transfer of Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma to their court. Leading the protest at gate number 3 of the high court, Bar Association President Anil Tiwari said, "We are not against any court or judge, but against those who have betrayed the judicial system." He added that their fight is against corruption and a lack of transparency.

The lawyers want the transfer order to be reconsidered and withdrawn. On Monday, the Bar Association had repeated its opposition to the transfer and decided to begin the strike from Tuesday.

Mr Tiwari stated that the association was fully prepared for an all-out fight on this issue and would not back down.
"From the beginning, there has been an attempt to hide this matter. But now, lawyers across India are standing together in this fight. This is not just about one transfer; it is about protecting the integrity of the judicial system.

Until our demand is met and the transfer order is reconsidered, we will not resume work, no matter the consequences," he said on Monday.

The Supreme Court collegium on Monday confirmed its decision to transfer Justice Yashwant Varma to his parent Allahabad High Court. He is under investigation after a large amount of cash was allegedly found at his official residence, leading to the withdrawal of his judicial work.

The collegium’s recommendation was sent to the Centre and made public through a resolution on the Supreme Court’s website.

The cash was allegedly found after a fire broke out at Justice Varma's Lutyens Delhi residence around 11:35 pm on March 14. Fire officials arrived to control the fire and reportedly discovered the money. Following this, the high court collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, along with the Delhi High Court, issued orders, including removing Justice Varma from judicial work.

Justice Varma has firmly denied any involvement, stating that neither he nor his family placed the cash there. He also strongly rejected claims that the money belonged to them. Justice Varma said the allegations about cash being found at his official residence seem to be a conspiracy to frame and defame him.

He began his legal career as an advocate on August 8, 1992. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court on October 13, 2014, and later took oath as a permanent judge on February 1, 2016.
On October 11, 2021, he was appointed as a judge of the Delhi High Court.
