New address anticipated for world’s highest motorable road, BRO begins work

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is set to surpass its own record by constructing the world’s highest motorable pass. Commencing on the 77th Independence Day, the BRO initiated the building of the Likaru-Migla-Fukche road, situated near Hanle in Eastern Ladakh.

This road, spanning 64 kilometres, will establish a crucial link between Likaru and Fukche, a location 3 kilometres from the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh. Upon completion, this road will establish a new global benchmark, as it will attain an elevation of 19,400 feet, surpassing the previous record set by the Umling La pass, constructed by the BRO in 2021 at an elevation of 19,024 feet, as the world’s highest motorable pass.

The forthcoming highest motorable road in the world will establish a crucial link connecting Hanle to the CDFD road at Fukche. Charting its course through Migla, situated at an elevation of 19400 feet, this strategically significant road is allocated a budget of around 520 Crore Rupees for its realization.

An additional noteworthy aspect of the ambitious Likaru-Migla-Fukche project is its distinction as India’s first endeavour undertaken by an All Woman Road Construction Company. Spearheaded by Colonel Ponung Doming of the Indian Army’s Engineers Corps, who commands the five-member all-woman Border Road Task Force (BRTF), this remarkable initiative now oversees the BRO’s All Women BRTF. This is the world’s highest BRTF, positioned at an altitude exceeding 19,000 feet and operating within the challenges of extreme weather conditions.

The temperature range in this region spans from -50°C to -20°C throughout the year. This site holds significant strategic importance, and over the last three years, the BRO has successfully constructed an extensive network of roads spanning 32,000 kilometres. This network aims to grant accessible pathways to the Defense forces positioned in proximity to the LAC. The ongoing construction of strategic roads and bridges by the BRO is designed to enable the seamless movement of substantial military equipment and vehicles for the Army.
