Mumbai Police has started action against Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde group) MLA Sanjay Gaikwad for hitting a canteen contractor at the Akashwani MLA residence in Mumbai. The police are now in the process of filing a non-cognisable offence (NC) against him.

This comes after a video went viral on social media two days ago. In the video, Sanjay Gaikwad is seen angrily hitting the canteen worker, claiming that the food served to him was stale and of poor quality. He especially pointed out the dal, saying it made him feel unwell after eating.

According to reports, Gaikwad, a two-time MLA from Buldana, stormed into the canteen, shouted at the staff, refused to pay the bill, and slapped a worker sitting at the billing counter.

Later, while speaking to reporters, Gaikwad said, "I had been staying at the MLA hostel for the past 6 years. Previously, lizards and rats were found in the food served in the canteen." He showed no regret and strongly defended his actions.

"If someone does not understand the language of democracy, this is my language. I am a warrior," he said. He also added that he follows the style taught by Balasaheb Thackeray, the founder of Shiv Sena, and will repeat the act if needed.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, "Police should enquire into the matter. There is no need for a complaint to be filed. If a cognisable offence is committed, the police will take appropriate action. We need to understand that there are certain cognisable and non-cognisable offences, and accordingly, action will be taken. Lastly, how much force was applied determines the nature of the offence. The police will take appropriate action in the matter."

After this incident, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) of Maharashtra suspended the license of Ajanta Caterers, the contractor running the canteen, on Wednesday.
