Tesla is officially coming to India and is opening its first showroom in the country today. The electric car company has started its showroom at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). This is a big move for Elon Musk’s company as it enters one of the world’s fastest-growing electric vehicle markets.
In this Mumbai showroom, people can see Tesla cars closely and learn more about the company’s technology. It will also work as a main center for customers to experience Tesla.
Model Y price in India
Tesla will start selling in India with the Model Y SUV. The Model Y rear-wheel drive will cost Rs 60 lakh (about $69,765) if paid in cash. The long-range rear-wheel drive version will cost Rs 68 lakh. These prices are higher than in other countries because of high import taxes in India. For example: In the US, Model Y starts at $44,990, in China, it starts at 263,500 yuan, and in Germany, at 45,970 euros.
The Model Y will come to India as a fully built imported car (called CBU). Tesla will bring these cars from its Shanghai factory, which supplies cars to many countries. So far, Tesla has brought six Model Y cars to India for display and test drives at the Mumbai showroom.
Tesla has also brought Supercharger equipment and accessories worth around $1 million from China and the US. These fast chargers will be set up in and around Mumbai to help new Tesla users charge their cars. The Mumbai showroom is just the start- if people like the cars, Tesla will open more showrooms in India. Tesla is also setting up a service center in Kurla West, Mumbai, for maintenance and repairs.
Besides this, Tesla already has an office in Bengaluru and an engineering center in Pune. Before the launch, Tesla shared a teaser on its India social media page, saying “Coming soon” with a graphic hinting at the July 2025 launch.
