Tesla is all set to open its first official store in India on July 15, according to a Reuters report. The showroom will be located in Mumbai and will be called an "experience centre." Over the last few months, the electric vehicle (EV) company, led by Elon Musk, has been actively hiring in India and looking for spaces in both Delhi and Mumbai.

As per Bloomberg, Tesla’s first batch of vehicles has already landed in India. These include Model Y rear-wheel drive SUVs, which were shipped from the company’s factory in China. In addition to the vehicles, Tesla has also brought in Supercharger components, car accessories, merchandise, and spare parts from countries like the US, China, and the Netherlands.

Bloomberg reported that five Model Y SUVs from Tesla's Shanghai factory have arrived in Mumbai. Documents reviewed by the news outlet show the cars were declared at ₹2.77 million ($31,988) each. They attracted more than ₹2.1 million in import duties, in line with India’s 70% tariff on fully-built imported vehicles under $40,000, plus additional charges.

Although the cars were imported at a lower price, they are expected to be sold at over $56,000 in India before adding taxes and insurance. According to sources familiar with Tesla’s plans, the final price will depend on the company’s profit margins and market strategy.

For comparison, the same Model Y sells for $44,990 in the US, and the price drops to $37,490 after applying tax credits.

This price point could prove to be a challenge for Tesla in India, where consumers are often price-sensitive. While electric vehicles make up a little over 5% of new car sales in India, premium models like Tesla account for less than 2% of the market, according to data from the government’s vehicle registration portal.

After MumbaiTesla is also planning to open a second showroom in New Delhi, according to reports.
