Olympic bronze medalist Saina Nehwal announced on Sunday that she and her husband Parupalli Kashyap have decided to separate after almost six years of marriage. Saina, who won India a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, shared the news on her Instagram story.
She wrote, "Sometimes life takes us in different directions. After thinking a lot, Kashyap and I have decided to part ways. We want peace, growth, and healing for both of us. I am thankful for the memories we shared and wish him the best. Please respect our privacy during this time."
Saina and Kashyap got married in December 2018 after dating for several years. They first met at the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad, where they trained together. They were seen as one of the most loved couples in Indian sports.
Saina became a star in Indian badminton when she won the bronze medal at the London Olympics, making her the first Indian female badminton player to win an Olympic medal. In 2015, she created history by becoming the first Indian woman to be ranked World No. 1 in women’s singles. She has also won over 24 international titles, including many Super Series trophies. Kashyap, on the other hand, also had a successful career. His biggest achievement was winning the gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He also reached the quarterfinals of the Olympics in 2012.
In recent years, Saina has struggled with injuries. In 2024, she revealed that she has arthritis and severe knee problems, which have affected her ability to train and compete. She said her knee cartilage is severely damaged, making it difficult to train for extended periods and compete at the highest level. Parupalli Kashyap has not shared any statement about the separation so far. Their fans and the sports community have expressed support and wished both of them strength during this difficult time.
