Kap’s Cafe, a restaurant opened by comedian Kapil Sharma in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, was attacked late Wednesday night. Unidentified people opened fire at the cafe, damaging the property while staff members were still inside. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
The shooting happened around 1:50 am on July 10. In a statement, the Surrey Police Service said,
"On Thursday, July 10, at 1.50 am, Surrey Police Service was called to a business located in the 8400 block of 120 Street for a report of shots fired. Upon police arrival, it was quickly determined that shots were fired towards the business, damaging the property, while staff members were still present inside. There were no injuries to anyone at the business. SPS officers gathered evidence and canvassed the area for witnesses and surveillance video."
After the incident, Kap’s Cafe shared an emotional message on Instagram. The owners said they were heartbroken and shocked by the violence but will not give up.
"We opened Kap's Cafe with hopes of bringing warmth, community, and joy through delicious coffee and friendly conversations. To have violence intersect with that dream is heartbreaking. We are processing this shock, but we are not giving up," the message said.
The cafe also thanked all those who sent prayers and support. "This cafe exists because of your belief in what we're building together. Let's stand firm against violence and ensure Kap's Cafe remains a place of warmth and community."
Terrorist Harjeet Singh Laddi later claimed responsibility for the attack. He is a wanted criminal by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) and is linked to the banned group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). Sources said Laddi referred to one of Kapil Sharma’s past remarks as the reason for the attack. However, it is not confirmed if the cafe was the direct target or if the firing was meant as a threat to the comedian.
According to Canadian journalist Sameer Kaushal, around 12 bullets were fired at the cafe. He also shared a video on X showing bullet holes on the cafe's glass windows.
Police are still investigating the case and trying to find out the real motive. They said, "There is currently no suspect information available to share."
