Kantilal Bhuria, a Madhya Pradesh-based Congress candidate for Lok Sabha, made an astonishing statement that has sparked a political controversy. He said that men who have two wives would receive financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh for men if their party wins an election and gains power in Sailana. During an election campaign, a controversial phrase was made about the party’s Mahalaxmi program. When Bhuria made these comments, he was explaining the advantages of the Mahalaxmi scheme, which aims to empower women financially.

The program aims to reduce poverty by giving women’s bank accounts a 1 lakh deposit. Bhuria, however, went further and promised that men who had two wives would receive twice as much, which immediately caused a backlash. Prominent party figures, such as former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh Digvijaya Singh, and the head of the party’s state unit Jitu Patwari, were present when the remarks were made.
Bhuria’s remarks were swiftly denounced by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which described them as “cheap thinking” and derogatory to women. A spokesman for the BJP attacked the Congress leader for what they saw as encouraging polygamy and diminishing women’s worth. The BJP has demanded that the Election Commission investigate Bhuria’s offensive comments and take appropriate action.
In addition to stirring up controversy in political circles, the comment has sparked heated discussion on social media. Internet users have expressed shock and surprise at this kind of commitment, raising concerns about the possible effects on Indian marriage laws and societal standards.
All Indian nationals are prohibited from polygamy, except Muslim men, who are allowed up to four wives under Sharia Islamic law. For Hindus, Christians, and believers of other religions, polygamy is forbidden by the Indian Penal Code and the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955. There are, however, some outliers, like Goa and the western coast, where bigamy is permitted for Hindus.
Furthermore, polygamy is practiced in a large number of the nation’s tribal communities. The legal system in India acknowledges the existence of many legal systems, permitting distinct religious communities to be ruled by their legal systems. These personal laws must, however, respect fundamental rights and be consistent with the Constitution.
The Congress party is caught up in controversy as the political struggle intensifies. We still don’t completely know what Bhuria’s vow means, whether it’s a true commitment or just an election ploy.
