The student accused in the rape case at IIM-Calcutta has admitted that he bought sleeping pills from a nearby pharmacy. He mixed these pills into cold drinks and water and gave them to the woman before allegedly raping her, a senior police officer said on Monday.
However, police said there are many differences and unclear points in the accused student’s statements. The officer said, "The accused admitted he bought sleeping pills and mixed them into drinks he gave to the woman when she visited him for counselling. But he cannot explain clearly why he did this to someone who came to him for help. He is not answering that question."
Evidence shows that after drinking the cold drink, the woman went to a room in the boys’ hostel, where the alleged rape happened. The officer also said that after committing the crime, the accused called a friend and described everything. During the call, he was seen walking around outside the room where it happened.
About the woman, police said there is some confusion over whether she really is a psychologist. She has not shown any certificates to prove her qualification or said which college she studied at. Police also haven’t found any documents from her clinic or any prescription with her name on it.
Police also mentioned that the victim’s father gave different statements at different times. They are checking if the family was forced to change their statement or if any money was involved. The police have set up a special investigation team (SIT) with nine members to look into the alleged rape of a woman by a student at the IIM-Calcutta hostel.
This team is being led by an assistant commissioner from the South West Division, officials said. The incident reportedly happened on Friday in a boys' hostel at IIM-Calcutta. The next day, the student was arrested after the woman filed a complaint (FIR) at Haridevpur Police Station. A court has now sent the student to police custody until July 19 for further investigation.
