Troy Casey, a former model and self-proclaimed wellness expert, is making headlines for his unusual health habit of drinking his urine every day. Casey, who wrote the book Ripped at 50: A Journey to Self Love, claims he has been doing this for years because he believes it has major health benefits, according to the New York Post.
Troy Casey believes drinking his own urine helps his body understand itself better. He told the New York Post that urine contains stem cells, amino acids, and antibodies, calling it a "biofeedback loop" that shows what’s wrong with the body.
Casey first heard about urine therapy from a breathwork coach who claimed to have healed himself using a method called "urine looping," where a person drinks only urine and water for a certain time. Casey adopted this practice, and after 20 years, he remains a strong supporter of it.
Medical experts have raised concerns about Casey’s practice. Dr Michael Aziz, an internal medicine specialist, cautions that drinking urine can be harmful and lead to dehydration. He explained that urine is primarily made up of water and salt, and since the body eliminates toxins through urine, drinking it reintroduces those toxins.
Dr Aziz also warned about the risk of infections. He noted that urine from people with UTIs often contains E. coli bacteria, which can cause serious illness if consumed.
For people taking medication, drinking urine could be even riskier as it may lead to the reabsorption of drug residues that the body has already expelled. High urea levels in urine can also be toxic, making this practice potentially dangerous.
Dr Aziz warned that consuming urine could introduce harmful substances to the digestive system, leading to poisoning. Despite these concerns, Casey follows a specific routine, he discards the first and last portions of his morning urine and collects the middle part in a cup or jar, believing it contains the most stem cells.
Age-old practice
Urine therapy has been around for centuries and is mentioned in old texts. Some believe a verse in the Old Testament’s Book of Proverbs (5:15) refers to it: “…drink water from your cistern, flowing water from your well.”
Dr. Jonathan Jennings, an internist, said that long ago, doctors tasted urine to check for diabetes because sweet urine was a sign of the disease. In Hindu traditions, ancient texts mention "Shivambu," or drinking urine, as a way to improve health and feel younger.
Ayurvedic expert Kate O’Donnell compared urine therapy to a story in Hindu mythology where Lord Shiva turned blue after swallowing poison. She explained that urine removes toxins from the body, but some believe drinking it can help build immunity.
Casey takes this practice even further by ageing his urine and using it in enemas, thinking it helps absorb stem cells and cleanse his digestive system. He claims it even helped him get six-pack abs.
However, Dr Aziz disagrees, saying urine has very few stem cells and no scientific proof supports its benefits. He added that eating a healthy diet, dark chocolate, and drinking black tea are better ways to boost health.
