US-India relations strengthened as 250,000 new visa slots open for Indians

US-India Relations have been further strengthened as the U.S. Mission to India declared the availability of an additional 250,000 visa appointments for Indian nationals, encompassing tourists, skilled professionals, and students. This important announcement follows extensive discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden, highlighting the strength of US-India Relations and aiming to improve the visa process and promote travel between the two countries. This new visa appointment allocation occurs at a time when the U.S. Mission in India has already processed over one million non-immigrant visa applications for the second consecutive year. The embassy highlighted that this rise in applications reflects the strong interpersonal connections between the United States and India. In 2024, over 1.2 million Indians have visited the U.S., representing a 35% increase compared to the same timeframe in 2023.
U.S. Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, underscored that this initiative is part of a larger commitment by both leaders to enhance and streamline the visa process. He remarked that “Our consular teams at the embassy and four consulates work tirelessly to ensure that we meet the surging demand,” emphasizing the commitment of U.S. officials to facilitate travel for Indian citizens.
The recently introduced slots are specifically designed to cater to three primary demographics:
Tourists: The rise in visa appointments will enable a greater number of Indian tourists to travel to the United States, consequently enhancing tourism-related economic activities.
Skilled Workers: The United States remains a destination of choice for skilled professionals from India, who contribute significantly to various sectors of the American economy.
Students: Indian students constitute the largest contingent of international graduate students in the U.S., accounting for over 25% of the more than one million foreign students enrolled there.
