A woman working at a FedEx facility in Grimes received a life-changing surprise while finishing her work shift; she gave birth to a baby she did not know she was carrying.
According to local media reports by KCCI and KENS 5, Amethyst Blumberg went into labour at her workplace and delivered her baby on the floor of the facility.
Blumberg told KCCI that she was wrapping up her shift at around 8 am when she suddenly felt the need to use the bathroom. After using the toilet, she realised she could not stand up.
She said she then felt the baby’s head and understood what was happening. Blumberg managed to open the restroom door and call for help.
Emergency teams from the Johnston-Grimes Fire District arrived quickly at the FedEx facility.
Audio from radio traffic captured someone saying, “We are delivering the baby now.”
According to reports, the team reached the site at 8:29 am, and the baby was born just four minutes later at 8:33 am.
Blumberg and her newborn son, Onyx King Easterlie, were later taken to the hospital. The baby weighed nearly three kilograms at birth and is doing well.
Blumberg, who is now a mother of two, said she had no signs of pregnancy this time.
She told KCCI that her first pregnancy was normal, but with Onyx, she felt nothing and even lost weight. She said the only time she realised something was wrong was during labour.
“The only thing I felt was when my back started hurting from back labour. And when he was descending, I felt him move,” she told KCCI.
Blumberg later joked that Onyx is “our FedEx baby.”
Nick Pearson from the Johnston-Grimes Fire District said the situation did not surprise him, as emergency workers often deal with unexpected events.
“I’m just very happy that she was healthy and the baby was healthy,” he said.
Such cases are rare but not unheard of. Just weeks ago, a woman from Zion went to the hospital thinking she had severe stomach pain and ended up delivering a baby on Christmas Day.
Melanie Smith, 28, later told NBC Chicago that doctors informed her she was nine months pregnant, shortly before she gave birth to a baby boy.
