IRCTC announces reservation of lower berths for senior citizens, pregnant women

The Indian Railways declared that their first priority is for the lower berth to be allocated to physically handicapped passengers.

A window seat has long been the top choice for train travelers, with many preferring the lower berth for night journeys. Previously, passengers had the option to specify their preferred berth, such as lower or upper berths. However, with the new IRCTC announcement on reservation, there is a shift in this process.

A lot of young people have been sitting on the lower berths while the elderly and pregnant women have been deprived of the lower berth. Meanwhile, another unique issue of passengers’ struggle to get the lower berth has emerged. However, this situation has now improved substantially.

Lower Berth or Side Lower Berth is the first choice of lakhs of passengers who book trains. A reason these fringes are most booked is that besides being a window seat they are also comfortable for their boarding and alighting, and thus are liked by many people including me who prefer or select them during booking.

However, as in the case of utilizing the bus transport system, when we reserve and book our seats, the passengers don’t have the liberty of choosing the preferred seats they would like in a train. In the meantime, the Indian railways have implemented new rules that will determine the allocation of the lower berth.

In particular, the Indian Railways declared that their first priority is for the lower berth to be allocated to physically handicapped passengers. The announcement has been made that this action has been taken as a part of the measures to support the disabled traveler and 4 seats will be set aside in the Sleeper class according to this plan that they have all the arrangements. Also, Indian Railways has declared that on 2-tier and 3-tier AC coaches there will be 2 seats each which are reserved for the disabled persons and their supports.

It will be conveyed that the senior citizens are entitled to 6 to 7 lower berths in sleeper classes, 4 to 5 lower berths in 3-tier AC coaches and 3 to 4 lower berths in 2-tier AC coaches as a priority to disabled persons.
