In a big step towards women empowerment, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday announced that 35% of all government jobs in the state will be reserved for women who are permanent residents of Bihar.

“35% reservation exclusively for women candidates who are original residents of Bihar in direct recruitment to all categories, levels, and types of posts in all state government services,” Nitish Kumar said.

The announcement was made during a Cabinet meeting in Patna, which was chaired by the Chief Minister. Nitish also shared the decision on social media platform X, saying that it would help more women join the workforce and become part of the governance and administration of Bihar.

This decision is seen as an effort to give more space and opportunities to women in government services and make them active contributors in the state’s development.

Bihar Youth Commission to empower young people

In the same meeting, Nitish Kumar also announced the formation of a new body called the Bihar Youth Commission, which was approved by the state cabinet.

“I am pleased to inform you that to provide more employment opportunities to Bihar's youth, train them, and make them empowered and capable, the government has decided to constitute the Bihar Youth Commission. The cabinet has given its nod for this today,” said the Chief Minister.

The Youth Commission will give advice to the state government on matters related to the welfare and upliftment of the youth. It will also work with different government departments to ensure that young people get better education and job opportunities.

The commission will have one chairperson, two vice-chairpersons, and seven members, and all of them will be below the age of 45. It will also keep an eye on private sector jobs to ensure that local youth are given priority within Bihar. The commission will also work to protect the interests of Bihari students and workers who live or work in other states.

“The commission will be tasked with preparing programs to curb social evils like alcohol and substance abuse and will make recommendations to the government in such matters,” Nitish Kumar said.

The state government said that both decisions—job reservation for women and the Youth Commission—are meant to make Bihar’s people more self-reliant, skilled, and job-ready for a better future.
