In a groundbreaking achievement, Jiya Rai, a 16-year-old swimmer from Mumbai with autism spectrum disorder, has made history by becoming the youngest and fastest para swimmer to cross the English Channel. Completing the swim from Abbot’s Cliff in England to Pointe de la Courte-Dune in France in just 17 hours and 25 minutes, Jiya’s remarkable feat, achieved from July 28 to 29, 2024, has garnered international acclaim and set a new benchmark in the world of para swimming.

The Western Naval Command (WNC) celebrated Jiya’s historic accomplishment, acknowledging her as the world’s youngest and fastest female para swimmer to complete the English Channel solo. “All personnel of WNC convey their heartiest congratulations to Jiya Rai for becoming the world’s youngest and fastest female para swimmer to successfully swim solo across the English Channel,” the WNC shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. This recognition underscores the significance of Jiya’s achievement, both in terms of her age and the challenging nature of the swim.

In March 2022, Jiya made headlines by swimming 29 kilometers across the Palk Strait from Talaimannar, Sri Lanka, to Dhanuskodi, India, setting a world record with a time of 13 hours and 10 minutes. This achievement was significant not only for its distance but also for showcasing her ability to overcome the barriers posed by her disability.

Later, in December 2022, Jiya further established her place in the annals of swimming history as the youngest and only female member of a six-person relay team. They completed a 1,100 km relay swim from Mumbai to Goa and back to Vasai Fort in an impressive 11 days, 22 hours, and 13 minutes. This accomplishment highlighted her endurance and ability to perform under physically demanding conditions.
