Man with knife shot down at Republican Convention days after Trump incident

Milwaukee Chief Jeffrey Norman confirmed that the officers, not from the area, took action when the suspect charged at an unarmed individual.

In a swift and dramatic turn of events, a man wielding two knives near the Republican Convention (RNC) was shot and killed by Ohio police officers. The incident occurred shortly after an assassination attempt on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in Pennsylvania.

The Ohio police team, brought in to provide additional security during the convention, spotted the knife-wielding man a few blocks away from the RNC venue. Milwaukee Chief Jeffrey Norman confirmed that the officers, who were not from the area, took decisive action when the suspect refused their commands and charged an unarmed individual.

“Someone’s life was in danger,” Chief Norman emphasized during a news conference. “These officers acted swiftly to save lives.”

The man shot by the police has been identified as Samuel Sharpe, a homeless individual struggling with mental distress. Eyewitnesses reported hearing eight gunshots, with some claiming that Sharpe was shot in the back as he attempted to flee from security forces.

Resident’s response

The shooting has sparked wrath among Milwaukee residents. Many questioned why out-of-state officers were patrolling their neighborhood, located approximately a mile from the convention site. Community members and activists quickly gathered at the scene, expressing outrage over the police department’s involvement due to the convention.

Linda Sharpe, a cousin of the deceased, voiced her frustration: “They came into our community and shot down our family right here at a public park.” Samuel Sharpe had been living in a nearby tent encampment across the street from King Park, where the shooting occurred.

David Porter, another homeless resident who knew Sharpe, criticized the presence of officers from outside Milwaukee. “If MPD had been there,” he asserted, referring to the local police, “that man would still be alive.”

Residents highlighted that the tent encampment was a longstanding feature of the neighborhood, home to social service clinics and a shelter. Some believe that Milwaukee police officers, familiar with the community, might have de-escalated the situation.

In a separate incident near the RNC, Capitol Police officers and Homeland Security Investigations arrested a man carrying an “AK-47 pistol.” The suspect lacked a valid gun permit, and authorities grew suspicious of his attire—a ski mask and a tactical bag containing the loaded weapon. His identity remains undisclosed.

As investigations continue, the shooting of Samuel Sharpe raises critical questions about security measures and the role of out-of-state officers during high-profile events like the RNC.
