A father cried after losing his son in the stampede at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium. He asked the officials not to do a postmortem. “Give me my son’s body. Don’t cut it. He was my only son,” the father said. “He came here without telling me. Now he is gone. Even if leaders come, they can’t bring him back.” His son was one of the 11 people who died in the stampede during the crowd rush at the stadium. Many others were also hurt
All bodies were handed over to the families after the postmortems were completed in the morning. A huge crowd had gathered to celebrate RCB’s first IPL win in 18 years. The entry was free, and the celebration had become a major event in the state. As the crowd continued to grow, the area outside the stadium became increasingly packed.
While the event went on inside, things got out of control outside. The narrow gates couldn’t handle the number of people. Many tried to push their way in, leading to a stampede. By 5 pm, it was clear that several people had died and many were injured. Some people also fainted due to the rush. Videos showed them being taken to a nearby hospital. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has asked for an investigation to find out how the stampede happened. The report will come in 15 days.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said they were sorry for the overcrowding. He said they tried to keep the event short and added that the police couldn’t use sticks on the “young and active crowd” to manage them.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his sorrow. He said he was thinking of the families who lost their loved ones and prayed for the quick recovery of those who were hurt.
