More than 56,000 people have been affected by sudden flash floods in the northeastern state of Manipur, officials said on Tuesday. The floods were triggered after rivers overflowed and several embankments broke, sending water rushing into towns and villages, especially in the Imphal East district.

According to the latest updates, at least 10,477 homes have been damaged so far. Emergency workers have rescued and relocated 2,913 people from the areas most severely hit by the flooding. Sadly, one person went missing on Monday after being swept away by strong river currents in Imphal East.

On Monday, a fresh embankment breach occurred in Bashikhong after the Kongba River overflowed. This led to even more flooding in parts of Imphal city and nearby areas. Localities like Khurai, Heingang, and Checkon are still under water due to the rising water levels.

To help those affected, the state government has opened 57 relief camps. These camps are offering shelter, food, and support to families who had to leave their homes.

Nearly 100 landslides in five days

Making things worse, officials reported 93 landslides across Manipur in just the last five days. These landslides have further damaged roads and made rescue efforts more difficult in some regions.

Authorities are continuing rescue and relief operations across the state to help people stay safe and recover from the disaster.
