A Reddit post about an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) graduate resigning just ten days into his job has gone viral, igniting a discussion on social media.
A Reddit user shared the incident in a post titled "Funny incident of an IIM grad," recalling how the graduate left his job after realizing his job involved sales work.
The user wrote, "When I was 21 and working as an inside sales representative, I was assigned an account executive who had just graduated from one of the top three IIMs. He was a management trainee with a salary package of over ₹21 lakh per year and a ₹2 lakh joining bonus." The post was shared on the subreddit r/IndianWorkplace.
The IIM graduate started his job with great enthusiasm, excited to begin his corporate career. However, his excitement didn’t last long.
After just ten days on the job and his first visit to a distributor in Gurugram, he chose to resign. When asked why he was leaving so soon, he said, “Yaar, main socha woh marketing mein hire kiye mujhe, and now I’m told to do sales for one year” (I thought I was hired for marketing, but now they are making me do sales for a year).
The Reddit user said to him that handling accounts in sales was a common part of the role, but the IIM graduate had already made up his mind.
One user questioned, “Can we blame him? I have seen recruiters hiring for sales roles under the name of ‘marketing’.”Another pointed out the value of sales experience, saying, “Marketers need to work in sales first, or else they’ll stay in their bubble.”
A different comment said, “While misrepresentation is an issue, marketing ultimately supports sales. Ultimately, every job falls into one of two categories: building or selling. Everything else just complicates these two core functions.”
One user clarified, “Sales is a part of marketing. Marketing creates demand, and sales converts that demand.” Discussing the challenges of sales, a user wrote, “Sales is tough. Most people who stick to it are either very passionate or simply have no choice.”
Another comment pointed out job expectations, saying, “Ego plays a big role, and an IIM tag only amplifies it. A high CTC is great, but it doesn’t guarantee high-end work.”
