A fashion show organized in the picturesque ski resort of Gulmarg, Jammu, and Kashmir, has invited widespread backlash, with political figures and social media users terming the event as "obscene" for being organized during the holy month of Ramzan.
The fashion event, planned by designer duo Shivan and Narresh to celebrate the 15th anniversary of their brand, was held amidst the snowy backdrop of Gulmarg. Elle India posted a clip of the event on its Instagram Threads page, terming it as "audacious fashion" with the show having bikinis, capes, and winter-themed designs in its collection.
But the timing and nature of the event have incensed people. Critics say staging such a show during Ramzan is insensitive to local religious and cultural feelings.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah accepted the public outcry and directed an inquiry into the matter.
“The shock and anger are totally understandable. The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities and that too during this holy month. My office has been in touch with the local authorities, and I’ve asked for a report to be submitted within the next 24 hours. Further action, as appropriate, will follow from this report,” his office stated on X.
Some political leaders also commented on the controversy. Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq denounced the event and called it "outrageous."
"That in the holy month of Ramzan, an obscene fashion show was organised in Gulmarg... How could it be tolerated in the Valley known for its Sufi, saint culture and the deeply religious outlook of its people? Those involved should be immediately held accountable. Such obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated in Kashmir," he tweeted.
Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference chief Sajad Lone also criticized the timing of the event, though he maintained a liberal stance.
"I consider myself to be a person of liberal orientation and believe in dignified and mutually respectful coexistence. But this was not the best time to host such an event," he said.
