Fake ₹500 notes with Anupam Kher’s photo used in Ahmedabad scam, actor reacts

Ahmedabad trader scammed with fake ₹500 notes featuring Anupam Kher’s image; actor expresses shock as police investigate the unique counterfeit case.

Actor Anupam Kher was left speechless after learning about the Ahmedabad scam in which a trader was duped with fake ₹500 notes having his picture instead of Mahatma Gandhi’s. The actor took to X (formerly Twitter) expressing his disbelief, “My photo instead of Mahatma Gandhi’s on a ₹500 note??? Kuch bhi ho sakta hai (Anything can happen).” He also re-tweeted a video report on the recovery of these fake notes.

Faud explained

The case was lodged by bullion trader Mehul Thakkar on September 24 at Navrangpura police station. The suspects had apparently arranged a deal of 2,100 grams of gold worth ₹1.6 crore. They gave them ₹1.3 crore in cash upfront and told them that they would give them the remaining ₹30 lakh later. But when they collected the gold, the suspects disappeared, leaving behind some fake currency notes.

Thakkar’s employee, Joshi was taken to a temporary office the fraudsters had allegedly set up. The accused handed over 26 bundles of cash and asked Joshi to count it through a machine while they went off to collect the balance. Realistically, when the men disappeared, Joshi found the check notes with Kher’s photo instead of Gandhi.

The case is now being inquired. All the CCTV footage will be seen by the officers belonging to Navrangpura Police Station and the suspects, who used this fake currency, will be identified. One of the police officers working on the case called it a “unique case of counterfeit currency with a Bollywood twist,”

It was Prashant Patel, the manager of the jewellery shop with whom Thakkar had an association going back years. He had assured him that the buyer could not transfer the amount immediately and would make cash payments. However, later, these were found to be fake.
