Mumbai is set to get a taste of Paris this November as Galeries Lafayette, the world-famous French luxury department store, opens its first Indian outlet in the city. The 130-year-old brand, often called a symbol of Parisian fashion and elegance, will make its debut in South Mumbai’s Fort area, spread across two grand buildings and five floors.
The Mumbai store will feature over 250 international luxury brands, with nearly two-thirds of them making their India debut. From fashion to lifestyle, the store aims to bring the best of global luxury to Indian shoppers.
Galeries Lafayette is more than just a shopping destination. Over the years, it has become a global fashion landmark. As experts describe it, “it’s fashion, it’s a love letter to style.”
India’s luxury market is still small compared to Western countries, but it is growing fast. With the world’s fifth-largest economy and 1.4 billion people, the country is adding tens of thousands of new millionaires each year. Many of them are already embracing luxury lifestyles, from Lamborghinis to Louis Vuitton.
According to a report by international consultancy Kearney, India’s luxury goods market is expected to grow from 7.7 billion USD in 2023 to 12 billion USD by 2028.
The brand had earlier announced plans to open its first store in Mumbai in 2024 and a second one in Delhi in 2025. However, both openings have been pushed back by a year.
Galeries Lafayette already has stores in several major cities such as Doha, Dubai, Jakarta, Luxembourg, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Macau. With Mumbai joining the list soon, India will become part of the brand’s expanding global footprint.
