A proposed housing project in Neral, Maharashtra, around 100 km from Mumbai, has stirred political controversy after its advertisement went viral online.

The project, marketed as “Halal Lifestyle Township”, faced criticism for allegedly promoting exclusivity on religious lines, with claims that it was intended as a residential space for a specific community.

The row escalated when former NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo shared the advertisement on his X handle, calling it a “Nation Within The Nation.” Following the backlash, the builder removed the ad from social media platforms.

In the video, a woman wearing a hijab described the township as offering “authentic community living” with “like-minded families who share the same values.” She also highlighted facilities such as prayer spaces and community gatherings within walking distance.

Kanoongo stated that a notice has been issued to the Maharashtra government regarding the advertisement.

Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, President of the All India Muslim Jamaat National, criticised the use of the word “Halal,” saying:

“By using such a name and the word Halal, an attempt is being made to send out a particular kind of message. The builders and people involved in this are not working to unite society, but rather to spread hatred and create division.”

Shiv Sena spokesperson Krishna Hegde also questioned the advertisement’s motives and urged the state government to conduct a thorough investigation into the project.
