Srinagar city in Kashmir experienced an unusually high temperature on Thursday, reaching 34.4 degrees Celsius. According to the weather office, this is the highest maximum temperature recorded in the month of May in almost six decades.
Officials said that Srinagar logged its highest maximum temperature for May in 57 years. The all-time high temperature for this month was 36.4 degrees Celsius, recorded on May 24, 1968. This makes the temperature on Thursday the third highest day temperature ever recorded in May in Srinagar.
Officials added that the city had previously recorded 35 degrees Celsius on May 31, 1956. The temperature on Thursday was also nine degrees above the average for this time of the year, the officials said.
This heat wave is unusual for Srinagar, which normally has a cooler climate in May. The high temperature is causing concern among local residents, as they are not used to such warm weather at this time of the year.
In south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, Kokernag recorded the highest maximum temperature ever in May. The mercury at Kokernag settled at 33.3 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Previously, the highest temperature recorded there was 32.6 degrees Celsius on May 15, 2001.
The rising temperatures in Srinagar and Kokernag indicate a warming trend that could affect the region’s climate in the future. Weather experts are closely monitoring the situation to understand the changes better.
