For the first time ever, Indian Railways is using drones to clean train coaches and station areas. This high-tech initiative began in April at Kamakhya Railway Station in Assam. Drones were sent to clean parts of the station and trains that are usually hard to reach by human workers.

Why use drones?

The Ministry of Railways explained that the drones bring speed and accuracy to the cleaning process. “They reach tough spots on coaches and station structures. A smart leap toward hygienic & cleaner Railways!” the ministry said in a statement.

Traditionally, cleaning jobs at railway stations have been done manually by laborers. But this often raised safety issues, especially when workers had to reach high or narrow spaces. The drones, fitted with high-pressure water nozzles, can now handle those risky spots more safely and efficiently.

BJP leader Dilip Ghosh shared a video of the drone in action last month at Kamakhya Station. In his post, he said, “For a nation’s progress, modern and advanced machinery is essential.”

Over the past few years, Indian Railways has been using drones for various tasks. Back in 2018, drones were first brought in to provide real-time updates on the safety and upkeep of railway infrastructure. Then in 2020, the ministry introduced 'Ninja Unmanned Aerial Vehicles,' which improved monitoring by offering live video feeds, real-time tracking, and an automatic safety mode.
