Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the state has seen an 81 per cent drop in child marriage cases in 20 out of its 35 districts between 2021-22 and 2023-24. This major drop happened after the government took strict legal action against those involved in child marriage.

According to an official release, Mr Sarma also promised to end child marriage completely in Assam by 2026.

The state's tough campaign against child marriage was praised at the NDA chief ministers' conclave held recently. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mr Sarma said that Union ministers, chief ministers from other states, and PM Modi himself praised Assam for its "vigorous and relentless" efforts to stop child marriage.

According to the release, PM Modi asked other NDA-ruled states to follow the Assam model to fight against child marriage. He also suggested that officials from other states should visit Assam to understand how the state achieved such success in this area.

During the conclave, chief ministers from different states also shared their best practices in areas like education, sports, water conservation, women's empowerment, and improving government services.
