Amit Shah has scripted political history by becoming the longest-serving Union Home Minister of India, completing 2,258 days in office and breaking Lal Krishna Advani’s previous record of 2,256 days. His tenure has been defined by strong leadership, bold reforms, and a no-nonsense approach to internal security, making him a key architect of the Modi government’s agenda.

As the right-hand man of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah has not only transformed the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) but also redefined India's internal security landscape. From revoking Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir to replacing colonial-era criminal laws, Shah has helmed some of the most consequential decisions in independent India.

Key reforms during his tenure

From the abrogation of Article 370 that revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, to piloting an overhaul of the criminal justice system with three new criminal laws, Shah has steered major legislative and policy shifts. Under his leadership, the Ministry of Home Affairs has cracked down on terrorism, curbed separatist elements, and intensified action against narcotics and insurgency.

During his time in office, Shah also played a vital role in the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), signed 12 peace agreements in the Northeast, leading to the surrender of over 10,000 militants, and set a target to eliminate Naxalism by March 2026.

Credited as the architect of the BJP’s electoral dominance, Shah’s political journey spans from being the youngest BJP president at 49 in 2014 to one of the youngest Home Ministers at 54 in 2019. Known for his sharp strategy and execution, the 60-year-old leader is often described as the second most powerful figure in India after Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

At the NDA parliamentary party meeting, Modi lauded Shah’s achievements, reaffirming his critical role in shaping national security and governance. With Shah’s deep-rooted ideological commitment and administrative command, his tenure continues to leave a lasting imprint on Indian politics.
