Ahead of the 6th anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, there is growing speculation about the possible restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. The chatter gained momentum after a series of high-level meetings in Delhi.
On August 3, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Interestingly, no official details were shared about their discussion. Just hours later, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also held a one-on-one meeting with the President.
Over the past few days, Shah has met several key figures connected to Jammu and Kashmir. This includes J&K BJP chief Sat Sharma, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Kavinder Gupta, and All J&K Shia Association president Imran Raza Ansari. PM Modi is also expected to chair an important NDA MPs meeting on Tuesday.
These back-to-back meetings have sparked talks that the Centre may be planning to bring a law to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, which was revoked in 2019 when the region was split into two Union Territories. Some experts, however, have advised caution. Retired Army officer Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon tweeted, “Peace in Kashmir came at a heavy price. We shouldn’t rush into any big decisions.”
Geopolitical expert Arti Tikoo Singh also shared that strong rumours were indicating not only statehood but also a possible split, creating separate states for Jammu and Kashmir. She warned, “If true, it could be disastrous.” While there is no official confirmation yet, all eyes are now on August 5.
