On Friday, July 25, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed 4,078 consecutive days in office, making him the second longest-serving prime minister in a single, uninterrupted term in Indian history. With this, he has broken the record of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who served 4,077 days continuously from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977.

Only Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, has served longer than PM Modi without a break. PM Modi continues to hold office with strong political support and several major achievements in his name.

As he reached this milestone, PM Modi also held several important records. He is the first and only prime minister born after independence and also the longest-serving non-Congress prime minister. He is also the longest-serving prime minister from a non-Hindi-speaking state, Gujarat.

PM Modi is the first and only non-Congress leader to complete two full terms and get re-elected with a full majority. This means he is the only non-Congress prime minister in Indian history to secure a clear majority on his own in the Lok Sabha.

He is also the first sitting prime minister since Indira Gandhi in 1971 to return to power with a full majority. PM Modi has now joined Jawaharlal Nehru as the only two prime ministers in India who have won three consecutive national elections as the leader of a political party.

Moreover, he is the only leader in India, among all prime ministers and chief ministers, to win six straight elections as the leader of a party: Gujarat Assembly elections in 2002, 2007, and 2012 and Lok Sabha elections in 2014, 2019, and 2024.

This latest record is another big moment in PM Modi's almost 24 years as head of a democratically elected government, whether in Gujarat or at the Centre.

PM Modi was born in Vadnagar, Gujarat, to a modest family. He helped his father sell tea at a railway station. Later, he rose through the ranks of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and then the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Known for his strong communication skills and grassroots connection, he served as Gujarat’s Chief Minister for over ten years before leading BJP to a historic national win in 2014. Since then, he has worked to make India’s voice stronger on the global stage.
