A 20-year-old woman from Haridevpur has accused two men she recently met of gang-raping her on her birthday in Kolkata’s Regent Park area. The police have registered a case and started an investigation. The two accused, identified as Chandan Mallick and Deep (Dwip) Biswas, are currently on the run, and a search operation is underway to find them.

According to the police, the young woman became friends with Chandan Mallick a few months ago. Mallick had introduced himself as the head of a South Kolkata puja committee. Later, he introduced her to his friend Deep. Both men allegedly promised the woman that they would include her in committee work. Over time, the three began speaking to each other frequently.

On Friday night (September 5), the accused took the woman to a flat in the Regent Park area to celebrate her birthday. They shared a meal. However, the woman alleged that when she tried to leave, the men locked the door, assaulted her, and raped her. She somehow managed to escape the next morning and went home. She then told her family members about the incident.

Later, the woman filed a complaint at the Haridevpur police station. Police officials confirmed the complaint, stating, “The FIR-named accused Chandan Mallick brought the complainant to the house of another accused, Dwip Biswas, where both allegedly raped and assaulted her. An investigation is ongoing.” Authorities have assured that they are making efforts to track down the accused and have requested anyone with information to come forward.

This case has once again raised serious concerns about women’s safety in Kolkata. Recently, several rape cases have shaken the city. On June 25, a law student was allegedly raped on the South Calcutta Law College campus. The prime accused, Monojit Mishra, a former Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) student leader, was later arrested.

Last year, another horrifying case shook the state when a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was raped and murdered. That case had sparked nationwide protests. The accused, Sanjay Roy, a former civic police volunteer, has since been sentenced to life imprisonment. The latest incident in Regent Park adds to growing anger and concern over women’s safety in Kolkata, highlighting the urgent need for stricter measures and safer environments for women.
