A 24-year-old woman has filed a police complaint accusing three men of gang-rape inside the campus of South Calcutta Law College. The accused include a former student and two current students. The woman claims she was attacked after rejecting a marriage proposal from the main accused, who is a former student of the college.
According to the complaint, which was accessed by India Today, the main accused, referred to as ‘J’ in the report, allegedly pressured the woman to marry him. When she refused, he threatened her by saying he would harm her boyfriend and implicate her parents in false cases. She said he then confined her inside the college and assaulted her, leaving her injured even though she fought back.
“They tried to force me with the intention of having sex,” she said in her complaint. “I denied and fought back by not letting him do anything and pushing him back. I cried and asked him to let me go. I told them I have a boyfriend, and I love my boyfriend. But they did not agree.”
“They locked the gate, filmed the assault, and threatened me”
The woman said she had a panic attack and was struggling to breathe but received no help. She asked to be taken to the hospital, but the accused refused. She also said the college gate was locked, and though the guard was present, he didn’t help.
“I asked them to take me to hospital, but they were not helping me. They had locked the main gate of the college, and the guard was helpless and did not help,” she said.
Even after begging and touching the feet of the main accused, she said they did not let her go.
“They again took me to the room... they took me to the guard room forcefully, undressed me and started forcefully raping me,” the woman said.
She also said the assault was filmed and that she was blackmailed to stay silent.
“They recorded videos of mine when the accused was raping me. They threatened me to show these videos to everyone if I do not cooperate.”
Later, when she tried to leave, she said they even tried to hit her with a hockey stick.
“I need justice,” her complaint read.
Accused linked to political student wing
The survivor said the incident happened when she went to the college around 12 pm on Wednesday to fill out exam-related forms. She was sitting in the college union room, and later the main college gate was locked on the accused’s instruction. According to her, the rape took place inside the security guard's room.
The police have arrested all three accused after an FIR was filed at Kasba Police Station. The main accused has been identified as Monojit Mishra (31), a former student and general secretary of the South Kolkata district unit of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). The other two accused are Zaib Ahmed, a first-year student, and Pramit Mukherjee, also known as Pramit Mukhopadhyay, another current student of the college.
