A disturbing case of online fraud has come to light in Gurugram, where a 15-year-old schoolgirl was blackmailed with morphed photos and forced to transfer ₹80 lakh from her grandmother's bank account, which she could access through online banking.
The police registered the case in December last year and have arrested six people so far. The latest arrest was made on Tuesday, and the police recovered the grandmother's debit card along with ₹5 lakh from the accused. So far, a total of ₹36 lakh has been recovered, and the investigation is still ongoing.
The 75-year-old woman filed a complaint at the Sector 10 police station, stating that she had received a large amount of money in her bank account after selling land. Her granddaughter, a Class 9 student, had access to the account.
Some people blackmailed the girl by threatening to spread her edited photos. Scared, she transferred ₹80 lakh in parts to the phone numbers given by the blackmailers. After the complaint was filed, the police registered a case and started an investigation.
The case began with an innocent school conversation that took a dangerous turn. The girl told her friend that her grandmother had received a large sum of money in her bank account and that she had access to it. The information spread, eventually reaching a Class 10 boy, who then informed his elder brother. The brother, along with a friend, plotted the crime.
A 20-year-old man named Sumit Kataria, who has now been arrested, befriended the girl online. He allegedly edited her photos and threatened to spread them on social media. The girl was warned that if she didn’t pay, the morphed photos would be shared.
After multiple payments, the bank account was emptied. One of the blackmailers then confronted the girl at her coaching class and threatened her. Noticing that she was visibly distressed, her teacher asked her what was wrong. She finally opened up and shared everything. The teacher then informed her family, and her grandmother immediately approached the police for help.
