The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police arrested Purushottam Chavan on Wednesday for cheating a businessman from Surat and others of ₹7.42 crore. Chavan is the husband of IPS officer Rashmi Karandikar.

According to police officials, Chavan was already in jail in connection with another case. On Wednesday evening, EOW officials took him into their custody for this new complaint.

Chavan is accused of taking money from a businessman after promising to sell government quota plots at lower prices. He also allegedly told the businessman that he could help him get contracts to supply T-shirts to the Maharashtra Police Academy, an official said. These promises turned out to be false, and the businessman filed a complaint with the EOW.

This is not the first case against Chavan. Last month, he was arrested by the EOW in a similar cheating case. In that case, he was accused of cheating several people out of ₹24.78 crore by offering to sell government quota flats in Mumbai, Thane, and Pune at cheap rates.

Investigations in both cases are still going on. The police are trying to find out if more people were cheated in the same way.
