An Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London, scheduled for Tuesday, was cancelled due to a technical issue, adding to the airline's recent string of problems. This flight, AI-159, was supposed to be the first one on this route since the tragic crash of AI-171 last week.
According to Air India, the aircraft faced a technical fault before take-off, and passengers will be given full refunds.
The grounded AI-159 had replaced the ill-fated AI-171, which crashed into a residential area shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad last week. The accident killed 274 people, including nearly all on board and several people on the ground.
Data from Flightradar24 showed that the plane for the AI-159 flight was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, the same model involved in last week’s crash.
Tuesday’s cancellation marks the fourth issue involving an Air India aircraft in just 24 hours.
Earlier the same day, AI-180, flying from San Francisco to Mumbai, reported a technical issue during a scheduled stop in Kolkata, leading to passengers being asked to deplane.
On Monday, AI-315, a Dreamliner flying from Hong Kong to Delhi, had to return shortly after takeoff due to a suspected problem. Another flight, Air India Express from Delhi to Ranchi, was also turned back because of a possible snag.
These back-to-back incidents have raised questions about the safety of Air India’s wide-body aircraft. Many of these planes are Boeing 787-8 models, which are currently under the spotlight due to the recent crash.
The tragic AI-171 crash claimed the lives of 274 people, including five medical students on the ground and all but one person on board. The aircraft hit a hostel building at BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad seconds after takeoff.
Air India has promised refunds for the passengers of AI-159 and stated that safety is a top priority. Investigations into the crash and the technical issues are currently ongoing.
