US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the United States is close to making a nuclear deal with Iran. He warned that Iran must agree to the deal to avoid a military strike. Trump also said that Iran has “sort of” agreed to the deal. Speaking to business people in Qatar, Trump said, “We want to fix the problem with Iran by talking, not by fighting. There are only two ways: talking or fighting.”

He also said that theUS does not plan to cause any nuclear damage in Iran. “I think we are close to making a deal without doing that,” he said, talking about military action. Iran has already had four rounds of talks with the US. These talks are meant to stop Israel from attacking Iran over its nuclear program. “You may have read the news today about Iran. It has kind of said yes to the deal,” Trump said.

Trump didn’t give details himself, but a top adviser to Iran’s leader told ABC News that Iran could give up some of its enriched uranium if the US agrees to end sanctions. He also thanked Qatar’s leader, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, for helping with the talks. He said Iran should thank the emir, too. Qatar and Iran share a big oil and gas field that brings in a lot of money for both countries.

Trump said, “Last night I said Iran is lucky to have the emir. He’s trying to stop us from taking military action against Iran. He keeps saying, ‘You can make a deal.’ He’s trying hard. Iran should say a big thank you to him.” During his speech, Trump also said that Iran “makes good drones.”After Trump spoke about the nuclear deal, oil prices went down. According to Reuters, Brent oil prices dropped by more than $2, falling below $64 a barrel — a drop of over 3%.

Iran is one of the top oil-producing countries in OPEC. It produces about 3 million barrels of oil every day, which is about 3% of the world’s total oil. But Iran has been under heavy US sanctions since 2015, when Trump pulled the US out of an earlier nuclear deal.
