Sikkim is preparing to switch to a fully digital permit system for tourists visiting its high-altitude and border-facing destinations. This move will replace the old paper permits with quick, QR-coded passes, making travel smoother and easier.
The new online system will be used for Restricted Area Permits (RAP) and Protected Area Permits (PAP). These permits are needed for places close to international borders, such as Nathu La, Tsomgo Lake, Lachen, Lachung, and Zuluk.
Officials say the digital platform will help reduce long lines during busy tourist seasons and allow better tracking of visitor movement in fragile, eco-sensitive zones.
For years, travellers to Sikkim have had to wait in long queues for physical permits. The shift to a digital process is expected to make approvals faster and more convenient, especially when tourist numbers rise.
The system aims to make travel simpler while still protecting the environment in these delicate regions. The QR-based permits will be accepted at all approved entry points in the state.
How the new online permit system will work
Applying for permits will now be much easier. Here’s what travellers can expect:
Visitors can apply online and get a QR-code permit, which can be scanned quickly at security points.
The system will share information across departments like tourism, police, transport, and the Army for fast, real-time checks.
The platform is simple and easy to use, helping people from different backgrounds complete the application.
Once approved, the QR permit will be valid at all authorised entry gates, allowing smooth travel.
Trial runs with a small group of tour operators have already begun. Officials say they are working to launch the full system soon to offer a more efficient, secure, and eco-friendly travel experience.
