Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has launched a new scheme to support non-working mothers in the state, promising them a yearly grant of ₹40,000. The announcement was made during the first-ever Aama Samman Diwas, a special day dedicated to honouring mothers for their sacrifices, strength, and role in society.
The celebration took place at Rangpo Playground, where over 32,000 mothers gathered to receive the first instalment of ₹20,000 each. The total grant will be given in two instalments – ₹20,000 in the first phase and another ₹20,000 in the second phase. Along with the cash benefit, each mother was also given a hot water bottle.
The state government will spend ₹128 crore on this programme, which aims to provide financial security to mothers who do not have an income of their own.
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Tamang said the idea for Aama Samman Diwas was both personal and political for him. He explained that mothers in Sikkim have always played an important role in social and political movements, especially during tough times.
He also shared that August 10 is a meaningful date for him, as it marks Jan Unmukti Diwas – the day he was released from what he described as an “unjust imprisonment”. During that time, he recalled, many mothers visited him in jail – some to scold him, some to offer advice, and many to give him the courage to keep fighting. He credited their words and encouragement for keeping his determination alive.
The Chief Minister said the scheme is a way to recognise and reward the silent contribution of mothers and to give them the dignity and respect they deserve. He added that this is only the beginning, and more initiatives for women’s welfare will follow.
