A Hindu temple in Melbourne, Australia, was attacked with hateful and racist words. Someone wrote “Go Home Brown C**t” on the walls of the Swaminarayan Temple on July 21. Similar racist messages were also found on two nearby Asian-owned restaurants in the Boronia area, as reported by The Australia Today.
Makrand Bhagwat, the President of the Hindu Council of Australia, said he was deeply shocked by the incident. He shared that the temple is a peaceful place where people come to pray, celebrate festivals, and eat together. "Seeing it damaged with such hateful words was heartbreaking for the volunteers and worshippers," he said.
Victoria’s Premier, Jacinta Allan, also strongly condemned the act. She called it “hateful, racist, and deeply disturbing.” Allan said this was not just graffiti, but an act meant to scare and hurt people. “It’s an attack on your right to feel safe and to belong,” she said. “There is no place for such hate in Victoria.”
She asked the police to take the matter seriously and said that the Minister for Multicultural Affairs will soon visit the temple to show support and hear from the community. Victoria's Premier said that no community should ever have to go through something like this. She praised the Hindu community for speaking out and showing great strength and dignity. She also said that their culture, faith, and presence are important to her and to the future of the state.
Meanwhile, Australian police have started investigating four related incidents in Boronia. These include the vandalism at the Hindu temple and two Asian-owned restaurants, according to a report by The Australia Today.
Police said that on July 21, graffiti was found at several locations in the areas of Bayswater and Boronia. The first report came from a healing centre on Mountain Highway, where someone had spray-painted racist words on the front wall. Later that morning, around 9:30 am, more graffiti was found on the Swaminarayan Temple on Wadhurst Drive. Soon after, two more restaurants on Boronia Road were also found with similar racist graffiti.
