The Bihar Police have identified the gang involved in the murder of Chandan Kumar alias Chandan Mishra, a murder convict who was shot dead while receiving treatment at Paras HMRI Hospital in Patna. The attack happened soon after he was released on parole for medical reasons on Thursday morning.
Within 12 hours of the killing, police arrested one of the suspects, Tausif Raja alias Badshah, from Phulwarisharif, a locality on the outskirts of Patna.
The killing took place in broad daylight. Five armed men were seen on hospital CCTV footage walking into Chandan’s room, pulling out their guns, and opening fire. They then quickly escaped. Chandan was seriously injured in the firing and later died during treatment.
The incident shocked the city and drew attention to the growing concerns about law and order in the state.
“This is not a movie. This is Bihar’s horrifying reality,” one official commented, as the footage showed the attackers moving through the hospital without hesitation.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikay Sharma said Chandan was a known criminal from Buxar district with several murder cases against him. He had been moved from Buxar to Bhagalpur jail, and was out on parole when the shooting took place.
“A criminal named Chandan Mishra, resident of Buxar district, against whom dozens of cases of murder are registered, was transferred from Buxar to Bhagalpur jail. Chandan was on parole and admitted to Paras Hospital for treatment. The rival gang shot him. He is undergoing treatment, and with the help of the Buxar police, we are identifying the members of the rival gang, Chandan Sheru gang,” Sharma told reporters.
Chandan later died of his injuries.
Police are also investigating whether any hospital security personnel helped the shooters enter or escape.
The police say that Tausif Raja, who has been arrested, led the group that carried out the murder. He is also accused in a firing incident during Ramadan near a temple in Phulwarisharif.
The Special Task Force (STF) and police teams are conducting raids in Phulwari, Samanpura, Alamijan Nagar, and Khalilpura in Patna and Hajipur in Vaishali district to catch the other accused.
The attack appears to be linked to an internal gang conflict. Investigators say there had been a fallout over sharing money from robberies at jewellery shops in Patna’s Saguna More and in Ara, Bhojpur district. Police suspect Chandan may have shared information about his gang members with police, which led to arrests in those cases.

Further investigation also shows that another gang member, Amit Kumar from Phulwarisharif, was murdered earlier after a fight broke out over a gents’ parlour business. Amit was accused of cheating gang members out of Rs. 50 lakh in the name of starting the parlour. He was later shot dead near Prakash Talkies Apartment.
