A video of a restaurant owner shouting at a customer for not leaving a tip has gone viral on social media. This happened on April 19 outside a restaurant named Table to Stix in Evanston, Illinois, USA.
In the video, the owner, Kenny Chou, is seen angrily chasing a customer down the street. Chou was upset because the customer didn’t leave a tip after paying $20 for a $19.89 meal. The customer paid the bill but left no extra money as a tip.
“You’re a piece of s**t,” Chou shouted at the customer. The customer replied, “I paid for my food. I handed you $20. You cannot charge more than what you paid, so what are you talking about?” However, Chou kept following and yelling at him, demanding an “18%” tip.
The customer then told Chou to “get the fk back” and added, “I paid for my food. I paid you $20. I am not legally required to give you a fking tip.” But Chou did not stop. He continued, saying, “I’ll smack the st out of you. Shut your goddam fking mouth. How are my staff supposed to make money? I’ll slap the shit out of you.”
The video spread quickly online, and many people criticised Chou’s behaviour. People started calling for a boycott of his restaurant. After the backlash, Chou publicly apologised. “It was a deeply regrettable moment where I, Kenny Chou, lost my composure. I stepped far beyond the bounds of respect and decency,” he said during a protest outside his restaurant.
Chou also told CBS News Chicago, “I apologise to him and to his family, and I was just asking if he could pass this message along to his little brother.” He even sent the customer’s brother his favourite meal along with a handwritten apology.
The Evanston Police Department has confirmed that they are investigating the matter as a case of harassment.
