Anupama Ramachandran has created history by becoming the first-ever Indian woman to win the IBSF World Snooker (15-red) title. The 23-year-old player from Chennai defeated Hong Kong’s three-time world champion, Ng On Yee, in a nail-biting final match. Anupama won the match 3-2 after an intense contest that kept viewers on the edge of their seats. In the final frame, the score was 60-61 when Yee missed the last black ball, giving Anupama the chance she needed to secure her victory and bring the world title home.
Who is Anupama Ramachandran?
Anupama Ramachandran was born on May 19, 2002, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Her entry into cue sports happened quite unexpectedly. She was just 13 years old when she attended a casual English billiards workshop during a summer camp at the Mylapore Club in Chennai. Her natural talent impressed everyone immediately, and it became clear that she had the potential to become a professional player. She began playing competitive snooker at the age of 15.
Alongside sports, Anupama has also focused strongly on academics. She studied at Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School and is currently pursuing her postgraduate degree in Public Policy at MOP Vaishnav College for Women. Managing both studies and international tournaments is not easy, but Anupama has done it with discipline and determination.
Anupama trains under the guidance of her uncle, K. Narayanan, a sports performance specialist. He helps her with technical training, strategy planning, and mental strength. Before winning the world title, Anupama had already achieved major success at the junior level.
She won eight national junior titles and then gained global attention in 2017 when she won the World Open Under-16 Snooker Championship in Russia. In her senior career, she has won the Women’s Snooker World Cup 2023 with fellow Indian player Amee Kamani. She also won the World Women’s Under-21 title in 2023.
Recently, Anupama reached her first world ranking final at theUS Women’s Open 2024, finishing as runner-up, which helped her reach World Rank 6 in March 2025. Winning the IBSF World Snooker title is a major milestone, and it is expected to take her career to even greater heights. She is now seen as a major inspiration for young women in India who want to pursue cue sports professionally.
