A 26-year-old man was arrested by Bengaluru Police after a woman complained on Instagram about a social media page that posted videos of women without their permission. These videos were shot in busy areas of the city like Church Street and Koramangala.
The woman found out that she was also filmed without knowing it. She reported the video and asked for it to be removed, but got no reply. After the video spread online, she started getting dirty and vulgar messages from strangers. In a video she posted on Instagram, she called out the account. In the caption, she wrote: “This person pretends to film the crowd on Church Street, but actually, he follows women and secretly records them without their consent.”
In the video, the woman said she “didn’t want to do this, but nothing else worked.” She explained that she is a student in Bengaluru. A video of her was shot in public on Church Street in a very inappropriate way and posted online without her permission.
She said that the account, which claimed to show “street scenes,” actually followed and secretly filmed women. Many women in the videos looked shocked or didn’t even know they were being recorded. The account had over 10,000 followers. She called this a “serious breach of consent” and said that just because someone is in a public place or has a public Instagram profile does not mean they agree to be filmed.
She tagged @blrcitypolice and @cybercrimecid in her post asking for help because she couldn’t tag the page directly after reporting it. After her complaint, Bengaluru Police arrested Gurudeep Singh, 26, who was running the account.
