A social media influencer named Akash Sagar is being investigated after a video of him and two friends chanting religious slogans inside a church became popular. Akash posted the video on his Instagram, where it was seen by 1.5 million people. In the video, he is seen entering the Church of Epiphany in Mawlynnong, Meghalaya.
Controversial actions inside church
In the video, Akash and his friends are shown going up to the altar of the church, shouting slogans, and singing changed versions of Christian songs, including "Jai Shri Ram." A complaint from an activist in Shillong says that their actions were meant to disrespect the church and the Christian religion. The activist also believes that the incident was planned to cause religious conflicts in an area that is known for its peaceful mix of different religions.
Police register FIR against influencer
Following the complaint, the Meghalaya Police filed an FIR against Akash Sagar and his companions. They are facing charges related to trespassing, disturbing public order, and insulting religious beliefs. In response to the FIR, Akash Sagar shared a post on social media, questioning the complaint. He asked, "For saying Jai Shree Ram?" and accused his critics of being "traitors." Akash also referred to a Karnataka High Court ruling in another case to defend his actions, arguing that no criminal charges should apply to those shouting religious slogans in places of worship.
