Aryan Maan, representing the RSS-backed ABVP, has won the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) president’s post, defeating Congress-affiliated NSUI candidate Joslyn Nandita Choudhary by over 16,000 votes. Aryan secured 28,841 votes, while Joslyn managed 12,645.
Of the four major DUSU posts, ABVP claimed three: President, Secretary, and Joint Secretary. Kunal Choudhary and Deepika Jha of ABVP were elected Secretary and Joint Secretary, respectively. The only post won by NSUI was Vice President, with Rahul Jhansla emerging victorious.
The Students' Federation of India (SFI) and All India Students' Association (AISA) did not win any posts this year.
NSUI national president Varun Choudhary shared his thoughts on X:
"We fought well in this odd election -- not just against the ABVP, but against the combined force of the DU admin, Delhi govt, central govt, RSS-BJP & Delhi Police. Yet thousands of DU students stood firmly with us and our candidates fought well. Best wishes to Rahul Jhansla, newly elected DUSU vice president from NSUI panel, and to all other office bearers who won. Win or loss, NSUI will always fight for common students, their issues & to save DU. We will only grow stronger."
Background
Last year, NSUI’s Ronak Khatri won the president's post, ending a seven-year gap, and also bagged the joint secretary’s post. ABVP had secured the vice president and retained the secretary’s position, keeping its presence in the union.
The DUSU elections are considered high-stakes, with nearly 40% voter turnout this year. Over the years, this student political contest has produced leaders who later became prominent in Indian politics, including Arun Jaitley and Ajay Maken.
